“But what happened?” Sometimes the honest answer is: nothing. Work is moving along, the house is standing, relationships are functioning. And yet there is pressure inside, difficulty truly resting, the feeling that something remains unresolved but cannot be located.

When distress has a reason, it is painful but readable. When it does not, it carries an extra weight: the feeling that one has no right to it. A person begins searching for the cause as if looking for a lost object at home — and cannot find it.
It may be worth questioning that search a little. Not because there is no cause, but because the demand to find it before anything else may itself be part of the pressure.
Fear has an object. Distress often does not — or it has one that has not yet revealed itself. That does not make it less real. It makes it harder to tell, because telling asks for a narrative.
Perhaps the order is reversed: the feeling comes first, and the word arrives later, sideways, in a sentence said almost by accident. It is possible to begin precisely with what does not yet have a form.
